Amazon.com Product Description
This heavy-duty platform-style rack is designed as a 2 + 2 system so it can be easily converted to hold either two bicycles or four bicycles. It mounts on a 2-inch hitch and folds flat against the back of a vehicle when not in use. The rack uses padded universal top clamps and adjustable wheel holders. Bikes need simply to be dropped into the wheel holders and clamps slid down onto the frames. Velcro wheel straps add security. To prevent rack sway, the hitch system is "no-wobble/no-tools" and includes a locking pin and 9-foot security cable. The rack carries a limited warranty against defects.

About Allen Bike Racks In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.
Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks shortly afterward. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage-run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and sells products in more than a dozen countries around the world.

4 bike carrier : Allen 104S Premium 4-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Reviews
This review is from: Allen 104S Premium 4-Bike Trunk Mount Rack (Sports)
I purchased a Allen 104S Premium 4 Bike rack and was pleased with the product when in arrived from Greenfish Adventure Sports. The rack was well built and easy to use.
My problem is the buckles that hold the main mounting straps tight on the car are not strong enough. I traveled about 140 miles when I heard a loud crack and looked in my mirror to see the bikes and the rack swaying back and forth. One of the buckles had broke and the other one was bent. I pulled over and tied the mouning straps on to the bike rack and had no other problems. If you purchase one - use the buckles, but also tie the straps fast in case the buckles break.

I read the first review and could not believe that it could happen again, so I ordered the same item. The condition of the box was so torn up,re-taped, damaged and repacked that I was not shocked to find the item inside used and damaged.I called Amazon and they had another sent out. This one also was NOT new. The paint was chipped the rack scratched up, the foam crushed. Thankfully Amazon is so great about these things. BUT unless they get a new vendor--do not order it from their 'prime' source.

I was pleased with how this bike rack worked - it securely held 3 kid bikes and 1 adult bike for our car trip from NJ to WV - 6 1/2 hours on our Toyota Sienna minivan. There were no issues and we look forward to being able to bring our bikes on more road trips. I also was impressed with the Amazon customer service - I needed the bike rack to arrive by Wednesday and pay for the speed shipping - and boom it arrived and was installed that very night for our trip. I would recommend this product and the amazon service.

4 bike carrier : Softride 26321 Acess Dura Assist 4 Bike Rack Reviews
This review is from: Softride 26321 Acess Dura Assist 4 Bike Rack (Sports)
I just received this rack, unpacked it and assembled. The assembly was easy requiring only 4 bolts. I mounted the rack on the car's 2 inch receiver hitch using 1 additional bolt supplied with the rack. This bolt takes all of the slop out from between the rack and the car. The assembly is rock solid on the car and does not vibrate around like many other racks. The rack and car act as one unit and this keeps the motion of the rack and bikes to a minimum. The rack tips back and my van's back door opens with lots of extra space. I mounted 3 bikes and all fit well from a 48cm to a 61cm. The assist part works well and the weight of 3 carbon road bikes holds it in the down position and it is easy to lift up. There is a feature to disable the assist when no bikes are on the rack. This allows the bike rack to be in the down position with no weight on the rack. All in all this is a well engineered rack that is well built and very strong. I will be adding some lube at the main hinge points as it... Read more

I have this on a 2001 Yukon XL and clearance is not a problem. For the price, for what it can do, all the accessories it comes with, you can't beat it or even come close. Thule and Yakima racks are way more expensive and they will charge you for extras on top of that. But the tilt parallelogram design alone is reason enough to buy this rack with or without the hydraulic feature. It works smoothly and works as advertised. Hint: If you have a problem pulling out the spring loaded locking pin or moving the stopping block on top of the hydraulic pistons while the bikes are loaded. You just need to pull back on the rack a little to relieve some of the weight and it will be easier.
There are racks out there that tilt out also, but they aren't meant to be tilted with the bikes on. This rack works with the bikes on and they stay leveled out. There are racks that swing out sideways or scissor out. But with these types you have to unscrew a bolt with a handle on it by hand and then... Read more

I have been using this rack for a few months now and I am overwhelmingly happy with it. We use it for transporting the bike and the scooter to trails. We have 2 snow dogs that we attach to the scooter like a sled and they pull like the dickens. I ride the bike and pull the baby while my wife rides the scooter. I wanted this one so we could get the dogs into the back of my truck even if the bike and scooter were still attached. This has worked great! The fold down function is just what I needed and it feels strong enough to last. The shock assist doesn't seem to make much difference to me, but I am glad it's there when my wife lifts or lowers the bikes. It is really attractive attached to my truck and I have been approached by strangers to ask about how it works several times.
The mechanism for lifting and lowering it is simple to understand and use, but feels strong and secure. Assembly was not a problem, although a long-body socket for the bolts holding the top... Read more

Thule’s newest premium hitch also comes in a swing-away version for convenient rear of vehicle access.

The Thule 9027 Apex swing away is a four-bike hitch mount carrier for use on vehicles with previously installed 2" hitch receivers. It is designed for cycling enthusiasts and families that want the stability, functionality and space-saving rear orientation of a hitch mount bike carrier, but not the restrictions on the opening and closing of vehicle hatchbacks that often go along with those same carriers. Features include: a "swing away" design, an integrated hitch pin, an arc arm design for easier bike loading and carrying performance, increased mast height, Thule Hold Fast cradles and no-sway cages, fold-down bike arms, locks for securing the carrier and the bikes, and an integrated carrying handle.

Premium Four-Bike Hitch Receiver Stowage That Doesn't Block Hatchbacks
The 9027 Apex is arranged in two primary sections: an upright mast assembly with folding arms to support bikes, and a two-piece, horizontally folding swing arm assembly. Included hardware and generic tools provide for easy combining of the mast and swing arm sections, which terminates in a 2" hitch that is inserted into the vehicle's hitch receiver. The carrier ensures access to rear hatchbacks, even when fully loaded, through its spring-loaded mechanism that connects the two assemblies and that allows the entire unit to be pushed to the passenger side of the vehicle. As this is done the two folded pieces of the swing arm unify along a single plane, and are held in place by a tethered hold-open pin. A moveable joint at the edge of the outer end of the swing arm and below the mast assembly can also be secured in place using the carrier's main lock-up pin. This ensures that bikes extended to the side will not pivot and make contact with vehicles. When not swung out to the side, the carrier automatically centers itself against the rear of the vehicle, the two pieces of the swing arm pressed together by spring loaded joints, which is locked in place by the lockup pin, which clicks into position automatically. A turnable locking handle positioned at a 90-degree angle to the lockup pin provides additional security when the vehicles is in motion.
Special arched bike arms, Hold Fast cradles, no-sway cages and a cable lock keep bikes stable and secure. View larger

The 9027 Apex has a four bike carrying capacity. Stowed bikes sit on top of Thule Hold Fast cradles, which are attached to bike arms that fold up and down from the carrier's mast section. Hold Fast cradles feature a soft, rubberized texture that cushions bikes and heavy-duty rubberized ripple straps to hold them tight. To provide maximized bike stability, bike arms also feature no-sway cages. No-sway cages are rigid rubberized bike rack components that attach to the lower edge of the bike arm, hanging below the bike cradle (one for each bike). As the top tube of bike frames rest on the cradles, the no-sway cages attach to the vertical tube section of bike frames with included straps. This holds bikes firmly in place without the need of a heavy wheel tray sometimes incorporated into hitch mount carriers. Bikes can be locked to the carrier with a cable lock (included). The cable is retractable, pulling out of the mast section when needed, and automatically stowing there when not needed.
Integrated Hitch Pin and Locking Functionality
Another valuable feature of the 9027 Apex swing away four-bike carrier is its integrated hitch pin, referred to as an auto pin. This pin provides the main connection between the carrier's 2" hitch and a vehicle's 2" hitch receiver. The auto pin is spring loaded and built into the swing arm section of the carrier. To install, simply lift the auto pin slightly as the carrier's hitch section enters the vehicle's hitch receiver. The auto pin will click into the hitch receiver's pin hole automatically. The carrier's locking knob can then be twisted tight to secure the connection further, and locked into place with the lock (included) embedded into the knob, securing the carrier to the vehicle.

About Thule
Thule was founded in 1942 by the Thulin family, when Eric Thulin, a true lover of the outdoors, put the Thule name on a pike trap he designed and began to sell in Scandinavia. It wasn't long before he added other practical items to the company's portfolio. By the 1960s, the company began to concentrate on car-related products, including its first roof rack. The Thulin family sold Thule to the publicly listed company Eldon in 1979, and it has continued to grow both organically and through acquisitions ever since. 4 bike carrier : Thule 9027 Apex Swing Away 4 Bike Hitch Rack Reviews
This review is from: Thule 9027 Apex Swing Away 4 Bike Hitch Rack (Sports)
Received rack very quickly courtesy of Amazon Prime shipping. Unpacked the unit and had it assembled within 30 minutes or so. Instructions were a little lacking in some areas, but I didn't have any trouble figuring out what was needed.
A couple of strange things that I noticed during assembly - 1) while this rack offers built in locks both at the hitch and a cable lock for the bikes, there are two exposed bolts that could be easily removed and would allow the majority of the rack to still be stolen... 2) While the rack is listed as for 2" receivers only, the hitch mount is in fact a 1" and it ships with a 2" adapter that I had to install... so this may very well work for people with the smaller 1" receiver hitches. 3) The hitch lock/tightening mechanism while a good idea, is very large and bulky. If your receiver is set back in and under your bumper even a little bit you may find the fit to be tight if not impossible to mount.

I can't say anything bad about this bike rack. It's very nice. The only problem I had with it was assembling the 2" hitch adapter. (Yes, it does look like it can be used in 1-1/4" hitches too.) You can rotate it 180 degrees and it still bolts on, and the line diagram in the instructions is very cluttered and hard enough to make out in my eyes that I managed to bolt it on the wrong way around. After putting it in the hitch and being unable to tighten it and stop the "wiggle" I took it back off, flipped it around, and it works perfectly. This could probably be avoided by not putting the bolt holes centered on the 1-1/4" stinger. Really, offset them 3 or 4mm and it will only fit one way... the right way.
The "auto-pin" is ok I guess. I would prefer a regular hole that I could put a standard hitch lock into. Using the wiggle tightening wedge as a hitch lock doesn't seem like a great idea to me. Anyway, there are 2 perfectly exposed hinge bolts that could be removed... Read more

I did a lot of research and the reviews for this rack were very good, so my expectations were high. I bought this to replace an aging Yakima Swing Daddy, which we had nicknamed "the Beast" that was just too difficult to work with. My initial impression was that, although it was just as heavy and cumbersome to maneuver onto the receiver as the Beast, it was well made and would last a long time. I liked the built-in cable and lock system, and it was easy to put together. However, fitting 4 mountain bikes on it proved to be even more difficult than the old Yakima rack. We have two 26" and two 24" Trek Mt. bikes, and only the Men's 26" bike would fit between the forks that the bikes are supposed to rest on. Because the forks are so far apart, the Women's 26" bike had to be placed so that one fork was above the top tube and one fork was below the tube, then I turned the cradle around to hold it. Neither of the 24" bikes would fit between the forks, so adapters were required to hold... Read more
