There is no concerns over needing cross bars and it's much cheaper than a good platform rack. Honestly, I wonder why hanging by the tires isn't the standard approach for all bike racks. Bikes are very secure. Works great as a 2 or 4 bike carrier. Highly recommend. This review is from: Highland 1375500 SportWing Hitch Mounted 4 Bike Carrier (Automotive) As an engineer I must say this bike carrier is well engineered. This carrier fits different sizes of bikes. Like most growing families we have 2 adult and 2 kids bikes. This one carries all bikes evenly. We have a 26" and a 24" and 2 20"bikes. the hooks are adjustable on the angled posts so that they cradle the wheels not the frame. I recommend this carrier to anyone.
