About Allen Bike Racks: In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.
Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three-dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

Allen Premium 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) Reviews
4 bike carrier : Allen Premium 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) Reviews
This review is from: Allen Premium 4-Bike Hitch Mount Bike Carrier (Sports)
I have been very impressed with this rack. It is very sturdy, doesn't wiggle or rattle while driving without bikes. The new clasp allows you to swing it out and back with bikes on it however, it is very difficult to get the pin back because it it is a very tight fit. This may wear in. I have friends with more expensive Thule and Yakima racks and the quality and functionality of the Allen 552R is on par with those brands. The rack is very light and easy to use. I have driven about 600 miles using this rack with no problems.

We installed this rack into our UHaul 1.25 inch hitch then loaded 4 bikes. It wobbled quite a bit, and after a concerning test drive we called Allen. The woman who answered confirmed it should not wobble in the receiver. She told us that the engineer/expert had gone for the day (it was Friday), and would call us after the weekend. We never received a call back.
We returned this item and purchased a Thule. The extra money is well worth it. The entire product is better, more thoughtfully made and is rock solid in our hitch. I guess you get what you pay for; in this case, you get a safer, more solid, and easier to use product with the Thule.

I purchased this rack, my second 4 bike hitch rack, and was pretty pleased with what's in the box. It's light. It's easy to assemble. I like the ease in which the bicycle cradles and strap holders rotate around the bike support arms making it easy to load up bikes. It doesn't seem to wobble (in my limited use so far.)
So what's not to like?
Poor engineering and customer support:
It came with a broken retaining spring clip, used to keep in place the bolt that holds the bike rack up. Grrr. The retaining spring clip for the retaining bolt is itself retained by a retaining cable, but the cable seems to be semi-permanently attached to the bike rack main post and crimped in place. I both emailed and called Allen Bikes over two weeks ago, and they never acknowledged either communication. A week and a half ago, I called again, and they said, oh yeah, they mailed me the new retaining clip -- but I haven't seen it yet in the mail. It could be the... Read more

Philips AVENT Digital Video Baby Monitor Reviews
4 bike carrier : Philips AVENT Digital Video Baby Monitor Reviews
This review is from: Philips AVENT Digital Video Baby Monitor (Baby Product)
In general, I think this is a very good quality monitor: the image and sound are at least as good as other video baby monitors, battery life of the parent unit is good, the range is quite good... We actually bought this and the Summer Best View and tried them both out and in most ways I found them to be similar in performance.
The three hang-ups I have with the Avent monitor (and why we returned it): 1) The designed of the base makes it very difficult to view anything that is essentially below it. For instance, if you want to have a bird's eye view of your baby's crib, it will be tough to manage. Since the camera cannot be wall-mounted it has to go onto a shelf and the camera angle cannot be directed low enough to make this work. For other types of applications this may not matter but for us it made a big difference (being able to see directly into the crib versus looking through the bars of the crib). 2) The battery life on the amera (if not plugged in it... Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program( What's this?)
My wife and I love this monitor. We have replaced a Summer Infant Day & Night Baby Video Monitor with 5" Screen - White with Philips Avent. The sound and picture are great, and there is no interference like we had with Summer. Both day and night video feeds are very clear, and the design is clean and modern.
There are some nice features like night lights on the baby unit, and the ability to have baby unit start playing lullabies by pressing a button on the parent unit. The parent unit can be set to turn the screen off automatically to save battery unless the baby starts making sounds. The camera is not fixed to the camera stand, but held by a magnet, so it can be easily adjusted in any direction, and it can be used without the AC adapter with AAA batteries. Philips manual tells you not to use rechargeable batteries... Read more

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program( What's this?)
My wife and I already own a Philips Avent Basic Baby Monitor w/ DECT Technology, but wanted to try this product out too and I was able to do a direct comparison. We did not originally get a video monitor as we felt uncomfortable with the Big Brother factor of watching our baby via video. However, we have grown to like it and it saves us unnecessary trips to the nursery to see if our baby is babbling and playing safely or is in need or help.
Here's what we like and dislike about this digital video monitor after a couple months of use:
POSITIVES:
1. No interference with WiFi networks and cell phones: We have a large WiFi network with 4 wireless routers, and we live in a dense neighborhood where there are several WiFi networks within range. We had no problems with reception on either monitor even when it... Read more
